Summary

Paspalum conjugatum, commonly known as carabao grass or hilo grass, is a creeping perennial grass native to tropical America and naturalized in tropical Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Northern Africa, and Northern and Eastern Australia. It thrives in a variety of habitats from sea level up to 5577 feet, including open grasslands, roadsides, and disturbed areas, often where moisture is abundant. This grass forms dense mats with its stolons and can reach heights of 12 to 24 inches. The leaves are light green, and the inflorescence consists of two rows of spikelets that can be purplish when young. It flowers throughout the year in favorable conditions.

Carabao grass is valued for its use as a turf grass in tropical regions due to its tolerance to heavy grazing and trampling, making it suitable for lawns, pastures, and erosion control. It is also used for forage in some areas. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to partial shade and requires moist soils with good drainage. While it is low-maintenance, it can become weedy and may require regular mowing to keep it in check.CC BY-SA 4.0
