Estimated Native Range
Summary
Paspalum setaceum, commonly known as Thin Paspalum, Beadgrass, Fringeleaf Paspalum, Sand Paspalum, or Slender Crown Grass, is a perennial grass native to open woodlands, pine barrens, savannas, and sandy fields throughout the Southeastern United States into Mexico. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1.5-3 feet (0.46-0.9 meters) and has a clumping form. The grass features narrow, wiry leaves and produces green, inconspicuous flowers that bloom in the summer, arranged in open, branching inflorescences. While the flowers are not showy, they can add a delicate texture to the landscape.
Thin Paspalum is valued for its adaptability to poor soils and its use as a ground cover in naturalized areas. It is often used for erosion control on sandy sites and is suitable for xeriscaping due to its drought tolerance once established. This grass thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium to fast-draining sandy or loamy soils. It requires medium amounts of water, making it relatively low maintenance. In cultivation, it is also used in prairie restorations and as a component in native grass seed mixes. However, it can become weedy in disturbed areas and may require management to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
