Summary

Passiflora caerulea, commonly known as Bluecrown Passionflower, is a vigorous, deciduous or semi-evergreen vine with tendrils, capable of growing over 10 meters (33 feet) in length. It is native to South America, specifically Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil, where it thrives in subtropical forests and along riverbanks. The vine’s palmate leaves are fragrant, and it produces distinctive blue-white flowers with a prominent fringe of coronal filaments in bands of blue, white, and brown, which are especially showy during the summer months. The ovoid orange fruit, which grows to 6 cm (2 in), is edible but not particularly flavorful.

Bluecrown Passionflower is valued for its ornamental flowers and ability to cover structures quickly, making it a popular choice for trellises, walls, and as groundcover in gardens. It prefers a sheltered position facing south or west in the Northern Hemisphere to protect it from cold winds. While it can withstand temperatures down to −10 °C (14 °F), it thrives in full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soil. Regular pruning is necessary to control its growth and prevent it from becoming invasive. In regions outside its native range, it can become problematic, with twining shoots emerging persistently unless removed.CC BY-SA 4.0
