Estimated Native Range
Summary
Passiflora vitifolia, commonly known as Perfumed Passionflower, is an evergreen perennial vine native to tropical rainforests and secondary forests in Central and South America. It can climb to heights of 15-20 feet (4.5-6 meters) with the aid of tendrils. The vine’s stems are cylindrical and covered in red-brown hairs when young. Its striking flowers, which can be up to 9 cm in diameter, are bright red and exceptionally showy, blooming intermittently throughout the year in its native range. The fruit is an oblong berry, about 5 cm long and 3 cm broad, with green flesh speckled with white and slight downy hairs, containing numerous seeds. When ripe, the fruit has a unique flavor reminiscent of sour strawberries.
Perfumed Passionflower is valued for its ornamental flowers and is used in tropical and subtropical gardens for trellises, arbors, and fences. It is also cultivated on a small scale in the Caribbean for its fragrant fruit. This vine thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil with organic content. It requires regular watering but is tolerant of short dry spells. While it is not typically invasive, it can spread rapidly in suitable conditions and may require pruning to manage growth. The plant can suffer from pests like spider mites and caterpillars, and diseases such as fungal infections.CC BY-SA 4.0
