Estimated Native Range
Summary
Peltandra virginica, commonly known as Green Arrow Arum, is a perennial herb that can be evergreen or deciduous depending on the climate. It is native to freshwater tidal marshes, swamps, and wetlands in the Eastern United States, extending into the Midwest. This plant typically grows from a large rhizome and produces many large, arrow-shaped leaves that are glossy and deep green. The inflorescence, a spadix surrounded by a spathe, bears male and female flowers, as well as sterile flowers, and can vary from whitish to greenish to yellow. It is not particularly showy but is interesting structurally. The plant is known for its ability to accumulate a large seed bank in wetland soils. It typically blooms from late spring to early fall, and in warmer regions, it may extend blooming into winter. The fruits are pea green to mottled green and purple, measuring 6 to 16 millimeters.
Green Arrow Arum is valued for its lush foliage and adaptability to wet conditions, making it suitable for water gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized wetland plantings. It is also used for erosion control in riparian zones. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and requires consistently moist to wet soil conditions, tolerating various drainage rates. While it is not drought-tolerant, it can withstand occasional flooding. It is generally low-maintenance but should be monitored for leaf spot diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
