Summary
Penstemon neotericus, commonly known as Plumas County beardtongue, is a perennial herb endemic to the montane and subalpine zones of California’s northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade Range. It typically inhabits meadows, open woodlands, and the edges of coniferous forests, thriving in well-drained, rocky soils. This species reaches approximately 31 inches in height and features lance-shaped leaves. From late spring to early summer, it produces showy spikes of tubular flowers that are blue-purple or pinkish, each up to 2 inches long, with distinctive white, mostly hairless throats and hairless staminodes.
Plumas County beardtongue is valued for its striking flowers, which add a splash of color to rock gardens, native plant gardens, and wildflower meadows. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal water once established and preferring full sun to partial shade. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage. This plant is not known for aggressive roots or significant pest problems, making it a good choice for residential gardens. It is also attractive to pollinators, such as bees and hummingbirds, enhancing its ecological value.CC BY-SA 4.0
