Summary
Penstemon ovatus, commonly known as Broadleaf Penstemon, is a perennial herb native to the open woodlands, grassy slopes, and forest clearings of the Pacific Northwest, particularly regions in the northwestern United States. It typically grows up to 3 feet tall and has a bushy form with thick, ovate leaves. From late spring to early summer, it produces dense clusters of tubular blue to violet flowers that are highly attractive to bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. The flowers are quite showy, making it a favorite among gardeners for adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Broadleaf Penstemon is valued for its ease of maintenance, drought tolerance once established, and the long-lasting, vibrant flowers that can enliven a garden. It is commonly used in native plant gardens, perennial borders, and as part of pollinator-friendly landscaping. This species prefers well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky substrates, and thrives in full sun to light shade conditions. While it is adaptable to various soil types, poor drainage can lead to root rot. It is generally disease-resistant but can be susceptible to powdery mildew in humid conditions. Broadleaf Penstemon does not have aggressive roots, making it suitable for smaller garden spaces and near structures.CC BY-SA 4.0
