Summary
Penstemon pseudospectabilis, commonly known as Desert Penstemon, is an evergreen perennial herb native to desert washes, rocky slopes, and open woodlands in the Southwestern USA and Northwestern Mexico. It typically grows to about one meter in height, with numerous erect stems that give it a shrubby appearance. The foliage consists of thin, oval leaves with wide, pointed tips and serrated edges. These leaves are notable for being oppositely arranged in pairs, with many completely fused at the bases around the stem, forming a distinctive disc. The inflorescence features showy, tubular flowers with expanded, lobed mouths and glandular hairs on most surfaces, except for the hairless staminode. The flowers, which bloom from late winter to early spring, are a striking reddish-pink color and grow to approximately 2.5 centimeters in length.
Desert Penstemon is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant flowers, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and native plant landscapes. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires minimal water once established, preferring well-drained soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Gardeners often use this plant to attract hummingbirds and pollinators due to its nectar-rich flowers.CC BY-SA 4.0
