Estimated Native Range
Summary
Penstemon serrulatus, commonly known as Serrulate Penstemon, is an evergreen perennial subshrub or herb native to moist meadows, forest clearings, and stream banks in the Pacific Northwest, including the Puget Sound lowlands and coastal regions. It typically grows up to 70 centimeters (28 inches) tall with multiple herbaceous stems emerging from a woody base. The foliage consists of lanceolate to ovate-oblong leaves with sharply serrated margins. From late spring to early summer, it produces showy clusters of tubular blue to purple flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds.
Serrulate Penstemon is valued for its vibrant flowers and evergreen foliage, which provide visual interest in garden settings. It is suitable for native plant gardens, perennial borders, and as part of pollinator-friendly landscaping. This species thrives in full sun to part shade and requires medium to high amounts of water, preferring well-drained soils. While it is adaptable to various soil types, it does best in soils that are rich in organic matter. It is relatively low maintenance but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
