Estimated Native Range
Summary
Penstemon triflorus, commonly known as Heller’s Beardtongue, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the limestone outcrops, open woodlands, and prairies of Central Texas and Northeast Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) and a width of 0.5 feet (0.2 meters). This species is characterized by its upright form and glossy, lance-shaped leaves. The showy, tubular flowers are a mix of red and pink hues, blooming profusely in the spring and attracting hummingbirds and pollinators. The flowers are arranged in dense clusters atop slender, erect stems, making them quite conspicuous in their native habitat.
Heller’s Beardtongue is valued for its drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens. It is also used in native plant gardens, rock gardens, and as a border plant. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun, requiring low amounts of water once established, and prefers well-drained soils, particularly those that are alkaline and rocky. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is not known to have aggressive roots or other significant problems. Gardeners should note that although it is evergreen, it may die back in colder climates and return in the spring.CC BY-SA 4.0
