Estimated Native Range
Summary
Pentalinon luteum, commonly known as Hammock Viper’s-Tail, is an evergreen perennial vine or shrub native to coastal hammocks, pine rocklands, and sandy soils of the Caribbean, South Florida, and the Bahamas. It can grow to a height and width of 7-10 feet (2.1-3 meters), often climbing with the support of other vegetation or sprawling as ground cover. The plant features glossy, lance-shaped leaves and clusters of showy, trumpet-shaped yellow flowers that bloom from spring to fall, attracting pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds.
Hammock Viper’s-Tail is valued for its ornamental yellow flowers and its ability to adapt to a range of garden settings, including as a trellis vine, ground cover, or container plant. It is relatively low maintenance, requiring only occasional pruning to maintain shape and encourage blooming. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils, tolerating both drought and moderate moisture. While it is not commonly afflicted by serious pests or diseases, it can be sensitive to overly wet conditions which may lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
