Summary
Perideridia kelloggii, commonly known as Kellogg’s Yampah, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the open woodlands, meadows, and grasslands of California, particularly in the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada foothills. It typically grows from a cluster of long, narrow, fibrous roots, each up to 15 centimeters long. The basal leaves have blades up to 45 centimeters wide, which are divided into many finely dissected leaflets with narrow, elongated lobes. The plant’s inflorescence is a compound umbel consisting of many spherical clusters of small white flowers, which are particularly showy due to their dense arrangement. Kellogg’s Yampah blooms in the summer and early fall, producing white and cream flowers that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Kellogg’s Yampah is valued for its ornamental flowers and its ability to thrive with minimal water, making it suitable for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is also historically significant as a food source for indigenous peoples, who consumed its edible tuberous roots. In cultivation, it prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade and is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it is drought-tolerant, moderate watering can encourage more vigorous growth. Kellogg’s Yampah is not commonly associated with serious diseases or pests, but it can be sensitive to overwatering, which may lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
