Summary

Phacelia parryi, commonly known as Parry’s Phacelia, is an annual herb native to the chaparral and coastal sage scrub ecosystems of Southern California and Baja California. It grows a mostly erect stem ranging from 10 to 70 centimeters in length and is covered in both soft and stiff hairs, which are glandular. The leaves can reach up to 12 centimeters in length, featuring toothed oval blades on petioles. The inflorescence is a cyme of bell-shaped flowers, each 1 to 2 centimeters long, with a striking purple hue, occasionally displaying paler coloration in the throat, and adorned with five distinctive white spots. The flowers are further characterized by five protruding, hairy stamens topped with white anthers, which bloom in the spring and are moderately showy.

Parry’s Phacelia is valued for its vibrant purple flowers and is often used in wildflower gardens, native plant landscapes, and for restoration projects. It is a beneficial plant for pollinators, attracting bees and butterflies. This species is adapted to the Mediterranean climate of its native range, requiring full sun to part shade, low to medium water, and well-drained soils. While it is relatively easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases if conditions are too moist. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness, but it can reseed prolifically under favorable conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
