Summary

Phlox douglasii, commonly known as tufted phlox, is a perennial herb native to alpine and subalpine areas, rocky slopes, and open, dry coniferous forests in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It typically forms low, dense mounds or cushions reaching 2 to 6 inches in height and spreading 6 to 12 inches wide. The needle-like dark green leaves are evergreen, adding year-round interest. From April to August, tufted phlox produces a profusion of flowers in shades of purple, pink, pale lavender, or magenta-red, which are highly attractive to pollinators such as butterflies and bees.

Tufted phlox is valued for its long flowering period and vibrant flower colors, which make it an excellent choice for rock gardens, alpine gardens, and as a ground cover in sunny, well-drained areas. It thrives in full sun to part shade and requires well-drained, sandy or gravelly soils. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Tufted phlox is also used in borders, containers, and as an edging plant due to its compact growth habit. It is relatively low maintenance but can be susceptible to foliar diseases in humid conditions or if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
