Summary
Phlox drummondii, commonly known as Annual Phlox, is an annual herb native to open woodlands and grasslands of Texas. It completes its life cycle from seed to flower to seed within a single growing season. This plant typically grows to a height of 15-45 cm (6-18 inches) and has a bushy habit with lance-shaped, ciliated leaves. The flowers of Phlox drummondii are quite showy, with a diverse color palette that includes white, cream, pink, lilac, rose, purple, red, and near-black hues. They bloom profusely from spring to early summer, with each flower reaching up to 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter and forming a rounded cluster.
Annual Phlox is valued for its vibrant floral display and its ability to attract pollinators such as hummingbirds and butterflies. It is commonly used in border plantings, containers, and as a colorful ground cover. While it is frost-tolerant, it does best with regular watering and protection from extreme heat and wind. For optimal growth, it should be planted in well-draining soil and can thrive in both full sun and partial shade. Although it is not typically prone to serious pest or disease problems, powdery mildew can be an issue in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
