Summary
Phlox hoodii subsp. muscoides, commonly known as Musk Phlox, Spiny Phlox, Moss Phlox, or Hood’s Phlox, is a perennial herb that thrives in the arid and semi-arid regions of North America, from Alaska to New Mexico. It is particularly adapted to open areas such as prairies, alpine regions, and rocky outcrops where conditions are dry. This plant exhibits a moderate growth rate, forming dense mats that reach 0.3-1 feet (0.09-0.3 meters) in height and spread 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters) wide. The needle-like foliage gives it a moss-like appearance, and during spring and summer, it produces showy clusters of white or pink flowers that attract pollinators.
Musk Phlox is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent ground cover for xeriscaping and rock gardens. Its flowers are not only beautiful but also fragrant, adding sensory appeal to the landscape. It is often used in cultivation for its low maintenance requirements and its ability to stabilize soil. For best results, it should be planted in full sun and in well-draining sandy or loamy soils. While it requires little water once established, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.CC BY-SA 4.0
