Summary
Phoenix sylvestris, commonly known as Indian Date, Silver Date Palm, or Wild Date Palm, is a slow-growing, evergreen palm native to diverse ecosystems including dry deciduous forests, plains, and scrublands in most of India and parts of Bangladesh. It thrives up to elevations of 4265 feet. This palm typically reaches heights of 13 to 49 feet with a robust trunk and has a crown of bluish-green leaves that can span up to 33 feet wide. The inflorescences produce white flowers followed by edible purple-red fruits. The sap is tapped for the production of palm wine and jaggery, a traditional sweetener.
The Silver Date Palm is valued for its drought tolerance and is often used in tropical and subtropical landscapes for its ornamental appearance. It provides a striking silhouette with its dense crown of feathery leaves and can serve as a focal point in gardens. It prefers full sun and well-drained soils but can adapt to a range of soil types. Regular watering is beneficial, especially in the hotter months. While generally pest-resistant, it can be susceptible to lethal yellowing disease. It is also used for urban planting due to its tolerance of air pollution and poor soil conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
