Estimated Native Range
Summary
Phygelius capensis, commonly known as Cape Fuchsia or Cape Figwort, is a semi-evergreen shrub native to the Cape provinces of South Africa, as well as Lesotho. It typically grows up to 4 feet tall and 5 feet wide, with a bushy habit and arching stems. The plant is adorned with showy, tubular flowers that are orange-pink with a yellow throat, blooming profusely from early summer to fall. These nectar-rich blooms are attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators.
Cape Fuchsia is valued for its long flowering season and vibrant flower color, making it a popular choice for ornamental gardens, mixed borders, and as a container plant. It thrives in full sun to part shade, prefers well-drained soil, and is drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal maintenance. While it can tolerate light frost, it benefits from protection in colder climates. In cultivation, it may be pruned back in late winter to early spring to promote bushier growth and more flowers.CC BY-SA 4.0
