Estimated Native Range
Summary
Phyllanthopsis phyllanthoides, commonly known as Missouri Maidenbush, is a deciduous shrub native to the south-central United States, particularly found in open woodlands and along forest edges. It typically grows to a height of three to four feet and is characterized by its entire, opposite leaves. Missouri Maidenbush is monoecious, with plants often appearing predominantly male or female. The flowers, which are not particularly showy, are produced from May to September and are followed by small, spherical capsules up to 6.5 mm in diameter that contain the seeds.
Missouri Maidenbush is valued for its adaptability and ease of maintenance in cultivation. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a range of soil types, provided they have medium drainage. This shrub is often used in native plant gardens, as a border planting, or in restoration projects due to its hardiness and the ecological benefits it provides, such as supporting local wildlife. While it is generally disease-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from leaf spot or root rot in overly moist conditions. Gardeners should be aware that it may require pruning to maintain a desirable shape and to promote air circulation, which helps prevent disease.CC BY-SA 4.0
