Summary
Phyllodoce breweri, commonly known as Brewer’s Mountain Heather, is an evergreen shrub native to the high-elevation, rocky subalpine and alpine habitats of California. It is specifically found in the southern Cascade Range, San Bernardino Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada, with its range extending into Nevada. This plant typically forms dense mats with short stems and can reach up to 12 inches in height. The leathery, evergreen, needle-like leaves are adapted to the harsh conditions of its native habitat. From late spring to early summer, Brewer’s Mountain Heather produces bright purple-pink, cup-shaped flowers that are clustered at the ends of the stems, offering a showy display that attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Brewer’s Mountain Heather is valued for its ornamental qualities, including its vibrant flowers and evergreen foliage, which provide year-round interest in rock gardens, alpine gardens, and as ground cover in suitable climates. It thrives in well-drained, acidic soils and requires little maintenance once established. It prefers full sun to partial shade and needs regular watering, especially in drier conditions. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can suffer from root rot if planted in poorly drained soils. This species is not known for being invasive when grown outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
