Summary
Phyllostachys bambusoides, commonly known as Giant Timber Bamboo, is an evergreen bamboo species native to China, particularly found in open woodlands and along forest edges. It is a member of the bamboo subfamily of the grass family Poaceae. This "running" (monopodial type) bamboo is notable for its rapid growth, reaching heights of approximately 20 meters (66 feet) and diameters up to 10 centimeters (3.9 inches). The culms (stems) are green and can grow at an astonishing rate of up to 1 meter (3 feet 3 inches) per day during the growing season, with records of some growing 120 centimeters (47 inches) in just 24 hours. New stalks typically emerge in late spring.
Giant Timber Bamboo is valued for its tall, graceful form, and the strength and flexibility of its wood, which is thin-skinned and easily split lengthwise. It is used in construction, crafts, and as an ornamental plant in large gardens and public spaces. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade, ample water, and well-drained soil. However, due to its invasive nature, it must be carefully managed and is best contained with root barriers. It can be problematic if not controlled, as it may spread aggressively beyond the intended area.CC BY-SA 4.0
