Summary
Physalis hederifolia var. comata, commonly known as Heartleaf Groundcherry, Ivy-leaved Ground Cherry, Ivyleaf Groundcherry, or Comate Ground Cherry, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats in western and central North America, and northern Mexico, including open areas in moist to dry grasslands, chaparral, and open woodlands. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This plant features heart-shaped leaves and bears yellow, bell-shaped flowers in the summer that are moderately showy. The fruit is a small, edible berry encased in a papery husk, which can be used in culinary applications similar to the related tomatillo.
Heartleaf Groundcherry is valued for its unique appearance, edible fruit, and adaptability to various soil types. It is often used in native plant gardens, as ground cover, or in border plantings. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium draining loam or sandy soils, with medium water requirements. While generally easy to maintain, it can become weedy and spread aggressively if not managed. Gardeners should be aware of its potential to self-seed and spread beyond the desired area.CC BY-SA 4.0
