Summary
Pilea microphylla, commonly known as Artillery Plant, is an herbaceous plant that is often grown as an annual, though it can be a short-lived perennial in its native range, which includes Florida, Mexico, the West Indies, and tropical regions of Central and South America. It is typically found in moist, shaded environments such as the understory of forests and along stream banks. This plant reaches a modest height of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) and spreads outwards, forming a dense mat of tiny, light green leaves that are about 1/8 inch in size, giving it a delicate, fern-like appearance, despite not being a true fern.
The Artillery Plant is appreciated for its fine-textured foliage and ease of care, making it a popular choice for terrariums, dish gardens, and as a ground cover in tropical landscapes. It thrives in partial to full shade and prefers well-draining soil that is allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Misting can be beneficial in maintaining high humidity. While it can be propagated by dividing the root ball or taking herbaceous cuttings, care should be taken as Pilea microphylla can become invasive outside its native range, spreading aggressively in suitable climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
