Summary
Pilea peperomioides, commonly known as the Chinese money plant, UFO plant, or missionary plant, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the Yunnan and Sichuan provinces in southern China, where it thrives on limestone cliffs in the shade of forests. It typically grows up to 12 inches tall and wide, with a distinctive appearance characterized by its erect stem and round, dark green leaves that resemble coins. The plant produces inconspicuous flowers that are not the main attraction. Its unique leaf shape and ease of propagation make it a popular houseplant.
The Chinese money plant is valued for its attractive foliage and is often used as an ornamental indoor plant. It is known for being easy to care for, requiring well-drained soil, bright but indirect light, and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. It is not drought-tolerant and should not be overwatered. The plant can be sensitive to direct sunlight, which may scorch the leaves. It is also appreciated for its air-purifying qualities and is non-toxic, making it safe for homes with pets. Propagation is simple, as it readily produces offsets (pups) that can be separated and grown into new plants. Potential problems include root rot from overwatering and pests such as spider mites or mealybugs.CC BY-SA 4.0
