Summary

Pimelea humilis, commonly known as Common Riceflower or Dwarf Rice Flower, is a perennial shrub native to grasslands, open woodlands, and heathlands across southeastern Australia. It typically grows up to 0.5 meters in height and can spread to form dense mats. The plant features small, linear to oblong leaves that are 5 to 15 mm long and 2 to 8 mm wide, arranged in opposite pairs along the stems. From late winter to summer, it produces rounded flowerheads consisting of 12 to 52 small, creamy white to pale pink flowers that are either female or bisexual, adding ornamental value to the garden with their delicate appearance.

Common Riceflower is valued for its low-growing habit and attractive flowers, making it suitable for rockeries, native plant gardens, and as a ground cover. It is drought-tolerant once established, requiring low amounts of water, and thrives in well-drained soils. Full sun is preferred to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and may attract scale insects. Gardeners should be mindful of its potential sensitivity to phosphorus and choose appropriate fertilizers.CC BY-SA 4.0
