Estimated Native Range
Summary
Pinus ayacahuite, commonly known as Mexican White Pine, is a large evergreen tree that can reach heights of 30–45 meters. It is native to the mountains of Mexico and parts of Central America, where it thrives in cool, moist highland forests. The Mexican White Pine is characterized by its long, slender needles that are grouped in fascicles of five, typical of the white pine group, with a length of 9–16 cm. The needles have a finely serrated edge and are accompanied by a deciduous sheath. The tree produces long and slender cones, among the longest of any pine species, measuring 15–40 cm in length and 4–6 cm broad when closed, opening to 6–10 cm. The seeds are small, with a long slender wing, which aids in wind dispersal.
The Mexican White Pine is valued for its attractive foliage and exceptionally long cones, making it a popular ornamental tree in parks and large gardens. It is also used for reforestation projects due to its fast growth rate. This species requires full sun to part shade and well-drained soils, and it is relatively low maintenance once established. It can tolerate a range of temperatures but prefers the cooler conditions of its native highland habitat. Gardeners should be aware that young trees may need protection from frost and strong winds.CC BY-SA 4.0
