Estimated Native Range
Summary
Pinus cembroides var. bicolor, commonly known as Johann’s Pine, is an evergreen tree native to the arid mountainous regions of the Southwestern USA and Northwestern Mexico, particularly found in open woodlands and scrub areas. This variety of pinyon pine typically reaches a modest height of 8-13 feet (2.4-4 meters) with a width of 5-8 feet (1.5-2.4 meters), making it smaller than many other pine species. Johann’s Pine has a rounded, dense form with needles that are dark green to blue-green in color. It produces edible seeds, known as pine nuts, which are encased in small, hard cones. The tree is not known for showy flowers but is valued for its nuts and evergreen foliage.
Johann’s Pine is appreciated for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid regions. It is also used for bonsai due to its small size and slow growth rate. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and well-drained soils. While it can tolerate low water conditions, moderate watering will support better growth. It is relatively low maintenance but can be susceptible to pests like bark beetles and diseases such as pine wilt.CC BY-SA 4.0
