Summary

Pinus jeffreyi, commonly known as Jeffrey Pine, is an evergreen tree native to the mountainous regions, including the Sierra Nevada, the Klamath Mountains, and other ranges of the Western United States, as well as Northwest Mexico. It thrives in open, dry forests and is adapted to a variety of mountain habitats. Typically, Jeffrey Pine reaches a height of 25 to 40 meters (82 to 131 ft) with a thick, furrowed bark that is orange-brown in color. The needles are long and grouped in threes, and the cones are large and heavy with a distinctive prickle on each scale. The tree’s aromatic scent, reminiscent of vanilla, lemon, pineapple, violets, apple, and butterscotch, is most noticeable in the resin and can be released by breaking off a shoot or some needles.

Jeffrey Pine is valued for its picturesque form and pleasant fragrance, making it a popular choice for large-scale landscapes, parks, and naturalized areas. It is also used for timber and is important for watershed protection. This species is drought-tolerant once established and prefers well-drained soils, although it can adapt to various soil types. It requires full sun to develop its best form and health. Gardeners should be aware that Jeffrey Pine can be susceptible to bark beetles and diseases such as white pine blister rust, especially when stressed.CC BY-SA 4.0
