Summary

Pinus ponderosa, commonly known as Ponderosa Pine, Bull Pine, Blackjack Pine, or Western Yellow-Pine, is a large, evergreen tree native to the montane, subalpine, and foothill regions across western North America, including dry mountain slopes and plateaus. It can reach a towering height of 223 feet (68 meters) and a width of 25-30 feet (7.6-9.1 meters), with a long, clear trunk and a broad, open crown. The bark is a notable feature, with mature trees exhibiting a distinctive yellow to orange-red color in broad plates, separated by deep black fissures. The needles are in bundles of three, sometimes two or five, and the cones are large and woody. Ponderosa Pine is an important timber species and provides habitat for wildlife.

This species is valued for its majestic stature and is often used in reforestation projects, as a windbreak, and in large landscape plantings. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. Ponderosa Pine requires full sun and well-drained soil, but it is adaptable to a variety of soil types, from sandy to clay. It is relatively low-maintenance but can be susceptible to pine beetle infestations and root diseases. Due to its potential invasiveness, caution should be exercised when planting it outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
