Summary

Pinus tabuliformis, commonly known as Chinese Red Pine or Manchurian Red Pine, is an evergreen tree native to the forested areas of northern China and the Korean peninsula. It is typically found in a variety of habitats including montane regions, plains, and hills, often forming pure stands or mixed forests with other pine species. This species can reach a height of 66-98 feet (20-30 meters) and develops a distinctive flat-topped crown as it matures. The needles are arranged in pairs, are 4-7 inches long, shiny grey-green, and persist for 3-4 years. Cones are broad ovoid, 2-3 inches long, and take about 20 months to mature, turning from green to brown as they ripen.

The Chinese Red Pine is valued for its fast growth in youth and adaptability to a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy and well-drained clay soils. It prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade. In cultivation, it is used for afforestation projects, as an ornamental tree in large gardens and parks, and for bonsai. The wood is utilized for construction, and the resin is harvested for turpentine and medicinal products. While generally resistant to pests, it can be susceptible to pine wilt disease caused by the nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. It is not commonly found outside its native range, limiting its potential invasiveness when grown elsewhere.CC BY-SA 4.0
