Summary

Pistacia chinensis, commonly known as Chinese Pistache, is a deciduous tree native to various habitats including open woodlands, forest edges, and scrublands in Central and Southeastern China, Taiwan, and the Himalayan region. It can reach a height of up to 20 meters (66 feet) and is known for its hardiness, tolerating harsh conditions and poor quality soils. The tree has a moderate growth rate and forms a rounded, symmetrical crown with compound leaves that turn vibrant shades of orange and red in the fall. The flowers, which appear in spring, are not particularly showy, with small, greenish panicles on separate male and female plants. The fruit is a small, red drupe that turns blue when ripe and contains a single seed.

Chinese Pistache is valued for its excellent fall color, drought tolerance, and ability to thrive in urban conditions. It is widely used as a street tree, in parks, and in residential landscapes. The species is adaptable to a range of soil types, from clay to sand, as long as there is good drainage. It prefers full sun but can tolerate part shade. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to verticillium wilt and should not be planted in areas where this soil-borne fungus is known to be a problem. Additionally, its seeds can be spread by birds, leading to potential invasiveness in some regions.CC BY-SA 4.0
