Summary

Platanus mexicana, commonly known as Mexican Sycamore, is a deciduous tree native to riparian areas, canyons, and well-drained soils along streams in Northeast and Central Mexico. It can reach up to 80 feet in height and develops a broad, rounded canopy. The leaves of the Mexican Sycamore are large, up to 8 inches wide, with a distinctive maple-like shape and a waxy upper surface that gives them a lustrous appearance. The bark is smooth and exfoliating, revealing a patchwork of white and greenish-gray that is particularly striking in the winter landscape. Flowering occurs in early spring, with inconspicuous flowers followed by characteristic sycamore seed balls.

Mexican Sycamore is valued for its rapid growth rate, shade provision, and its striking bark which adds visual interest, especially in the winter months. It is used in urban settings for street planting and as a shade tree in parks and large gardens. This tree prefers full sun to part shade, requires moderate water, and thrives in well-draining soils. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to anthracnose and leaf spot diseases, and its aggressive roots may cause problems if planted too close to pavements or structures.CC BY-SA 4.0
