Summary
Plectranthus madagascariensis, commonly known as thicket coleus, Variegated Mint Leaf, and candle plant, is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Lamiaceae family. It is native to the forest margins, rocky outcrops, and open woodlands of South Africa, Eswatini, Mozambique, as well as the islands of Mauritius and Réunion. This species typically grows to a height and width of 1-2 feet, forming a dense, rounded mound. It features fleshy, variegated leaves that are green with white or pale yellow edges and produces spikes of pale blue to violet flowers in the summer, which are modest in showiness but add a subtle charm to the foliage.
The Variegated Mint Leaf cultivar ’Variegated Mintleaf’ has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its ornamental variegated foliage and overall performance in gardens. Thicket coleus is valued for its ease of maintenance and its ability to brighten up shaded areas with its colorful leaves. It is commonly used in border planting, as ground cover, and in container gardens. Plectranthus madagascariensis prefers part shade but can tolerate full sun in cooler climates. It requires medium amounts of water and well-drained soil to thrive. While generally pest-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from mealybugs and spider mites. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so proper drainage is essential.CC BY-SA 4.0
