Summary

Pleroma urvilleanum, commonly known as Princess Flower, is an evergreen shrub native to the Atlantic Forest biome in southeastern Brazil, where it thrives in the understory of moist, subtropical forests. It is a member of the Melastomataceae family and can grow to 3–6 m (10–20 ft) tall by 2–3 m (7–10 ft) wide. The Princess Flower is characterized by its sprawling habit, dark green hairy leaves with prominent longitudinal veins, and clusters of showy, brilliant purple flowers up to 10 cm (4 in) in diameter that bloom profusely throughout summer and autumn. The flowers are particularly attractive to pollinators and add a tropical flair to the garden.

The Princess Flower is valued for its vibrant floral display and lush foliage, making it a popular choice for ornamental use in warm climates. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit under the synonym Tibouchina urvilleana. In regions with mild winters, it can be grown outdoors in a sunny, sheltered spot, but it requires protection from frost, often necessitating a conservatory setting in cooler climates. The plant prefers acidic, well-drained soils and benefits from regular watering, though it is somewhat drought-tolerant once established. It can be trained as a vine on a trellis or allowed to grow as a free-standing shrub. Pruning after flowering helps maintain its shape and encourage further blooming. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to spider mites and whiteflies, especially when grown indoors or in dry conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
