Estimated Native Range
Summary
Plinia cauliflora, commonly known as jabuticaba, is a slow-growing, evergreen tree native to the Mata Atlântica forest in Brazil, specifically in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás, and São Paulo. It can reach up to 49 feet in height and is notable for its unusual fruiting habit, with edible, purplish-black berries that grow directly on the trunk and branches. The fruits have a white pulp and are about 1-1.5 inches in diameter. Jabuticaba is highly ornamental, with glossy green leaves and an attractive, multi-stemmed form. It flowers several times a year, producing white flowers that are followed by the distinctive berries.
Jabuticaba is valued for its sweet, grape-like fruits which are consumed fresh or used in jellies, jams, juices, and wines. The tree is also popular in bonsai cultivation due to its compact root system and its ability to fruit even when potted. In cultivation, jabuticaba prefers moist, acidic soils but is adaptable to a range of soil conditions, including alkaline beach sands. It requires regular watering, especially when young, and thrives in full sun to partial shade. While generally pest-resistant, it can be susceptible to fruit flies and fungal diseases in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
