Summary

Poa alsodes, commonly known as Grove Bluegrass, is a semi-deciduous perennial grass native to a variety of habitats including moist woodlands, forest clearings, and along streams in the Northeastern USA and Eastern Canada. It typically grows to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and a width of 0.3-0.8 feet (0.09-0.2 meters). The grass has a clumping form and produces fine-textured, bright green leaves that offer a soft texture to the landscape. Its flowers are not particularly showy, appearing on tall, slender stems as airy panicles that bloom in late spring to early summer.

Grove Bluegrass is valued for its adaptability to shaded conditions and its ability to stabilize soil, making it a good choice for naturalized areas, woodland gardens, and riparian plantings. It is also used for erosion control due to its dense root system. This grass prefers consistently moist soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is not demanding in terms of maintenance, it does require adequate water to thrive. It is not known for any significant disease or pest issues, but it can spread readily by seed and may become aggressive in ideal growing conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
