Polygonatum cyrtonema, commonly known as Fragrant Solomon’s Seal, is a deciduous perennial herb native to forest margins, shaded slopes, and stream banks in Southeastern China. It typically grows to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). The plant features arching stems with alternate, ovate leaves and pendulous, tubular flowers that are cream-colored with green tips, blooming in late spring to early summer. The flowers are often followed by black or blue-black berries. Fragrant Solomon’s Seal is valued for its graceful form, fragrant flowers, and the ability to thrive in shady conditions.

In cultivation, Fragrant Solomon’s Seal is appreciated for its ease of maintenance and its use as a shade garden staple, providing a naturalized look in woodland gardens, borders, and underplantings. It prefers moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to shade, though it flourishes best in part shade.
