Estimated Native Range
Summary
Polygonatum humile, commonly known as Dwarf Solomon’s Seal, is a deciduous perennial herb native to forest floors and shaded slopes in Eastern Asia, including regions of Japan, Korea, and Siberia. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-0.8 feet (15-24 cm) and spreads 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) wide, forming dense colonies. The plant features arching stems with alternate, ovate leaves and small, bell-shaped, greenish-white flowers that hang from the leaf axils in spring to early summer. The flowers are modest yet charming, and they give way to blue-black berries in late summer.
Dwarf Solomon’s Seal is valued for its graceful foliage and unobtrusive flowers, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shade gardens, and naturalized areas. It is also used as a ground cover under trees and shrubs. This plant thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and benefits from a layer of mulch to maintain soil moisture. While it prefers part shade to full shade, it is relatively low maintenance once established. Gardeners should be aware that slugs and snails can sometimes damage the foliage.CC BY-SA 4.0
