Estimated Native Range
Summary
Pomaderris elliptica, commonly known as Yellow Dogwood, is an evergreen shrub native to the understory of cool temperate rainforests and moist open forests in Eastern Australia, particularly in Victoria and Tasmania. It typically grows to a height of 1–4 m (3 ft 3 in – 13 ft 1 in) and features branchlets that are densely covered with soft, star-shaped hairs, giving the plant a distinctive texture. The leaves are egg-shaped or elliptic, with a hairy texture. Pomaderris elliptica produces clusters of small, pale yellow flowers that bloom in spring, offering a subtle display of color.
Yellow Dogwood is appreciated for its hardiness and the textural interest provided by its hairy foliage. It is used in cultivation for habitat restoration projects, as an understory plant in woodland gardens, and occasionally as a hedge or screen due to its dense growth habit. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal water once established, and is tolerant of a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it can also adapt to shadier conditions reflective of its understory origins. Gardeners should note that while it is generally pest-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
