Estimated Native Range
Summary
Potentilla indica, commonly known as mock strawberry, is a perennial herb native to open woodlands and grassy slopes in eastern and southern Asia. It has been introduced to many parts of the world, where it can sometimes become invasive. This plant typically forms a low-growing mat up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall, with a spread that can be extensive due to its creeping stolons. The leaves are trifoliate, resembling those of a true strawberry, and the plant produces small yellow flowers from late spring to early fall. The flowers are followed by red aggregate fruits that resemble strawberries but are generally tasteless.
Mock strawberry is valued for its ground-covering ability, which can quickly fill in bare spots in the garden. It is often used in ornamental plantings, borders, and as a filler in container gardens. It thrives in a range of light conditions, from full sun to part shade, and prefers well-drained soils with regular moisture. While it is low-maintenance and can handle a variety of soil types, it may require control measures to prevent unwanted spread. Gardeners should be aware that, despite its common name, the fruit of Potentilla indica is not palatable like true strawberries.CC BY-SA 4.0
