Summary

Potentilla nepalensis, commonly known as Nepal Cinquefoil, is a herbaceous perennial native to grassy slopes and open woodlands in the Himalayan region, including Nepal and parts of Western Himalayas. It typically grows to a height of 30–60 centimeters (12–24 inches) and forms low, spreading mounds. The deep green, strawberry-like foliage consists of broad leaflets that provide a lush backdrop for the flowers. The cup-shaped, 5-petalled flowers, which may be cherry red or deep pink with a darker center, are approximately 2.5 cm in width and bloom from July to August, offering a long-lasting display of color in the garden.

Nepal Cinquefoil is appreciated for its ornamental flowers and its ability to form dense mats, making it a suitable choice for ground cover, rock gardens, and border fronts. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring only moderate watering and thriving in a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it is somewhat tolerant of different light conditions. Gardeners should be aware that although it is not prone to serious pests or diseases, it can suffer from root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
