Prenanthes purpurea, commonly known as Purple Lettuce or Rattlesnake Root, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, grasslands, and rocky slopes across Europe and extending into the Middle East. It typically grows to a height of 30-100 cm (12-39 inches), with a loose, leafy form. The plant features purple to pinkish flowers that bloom in late summer to early autumn, adding a subtle splash of color to the landscape. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they do attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Purple Lettuce is valued for its ornamental foliage and flowers, as well as its adaptability to different garden conditions. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, wildflower gardens, and as a border plant. It thrives in partial shade to full sun, prefers well-drained soil, and is relatively low-maintenance once established. While not commonly used for culinary purposes, it has a history of medicinal use in treating various ailments.
