Summary

Prosartes hookeri, commonly known as Drops Of Gold, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the moist coniferous and mixed deciduous forests of the Pacific Northwest, including Southwestern Canada and the US Pacific Coast. It thrives under the canopy of tall trees, often in the dappled light of forest clearings or along streambanks. This species typically grows up to a meter tall from a rhizome and features narrow, fuzzy stems. Its foliage consists of wide, oval-shaped, pointed leaves that can reach up to 15 centimeters in length. The leaves are hairless to hairy, with hairs often present along the edges and on the veins underneath, adding a textured appearance to the plant.

Drops Of Gold is valued for its understated beauty, with an inflorescence at the tips of branches producing one to three drooping, hanging flowers. These flowers may be somewhat obscured by the large leaves but are notable for their bell-shaped form with six white to green veiny tepals and six protruding stamens with large anthers, blooming in late spring to early summer. The plant also bears fruit in the form of an orange to bright red berry, just under a centimeter wide, which can add a splash of color to the garden in late summer to fall. In cultivation, it is used for naturalistic plantings, shade gardens, and woodland settings. Drops Of Gold prefers part shade to full shade, medium amounts of water, and well-drained soils. It is relatively low maintenance but can be susceptible to slugs and snails, which may damage the foliage.CC BY-SA 4.0
