Summary
Prosartes lanuginosa, commonly known as Yellow Mandarin or Yellow Fairybells, is a perennial herb native to rich, moist, deciduous forests and the forested slopes of the Appalachian region, including the Great Smoky Mountains, extending from New York to Alabama. Isolated populations are also found in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas and in southwestern Ontario. This species typically grows to a height of 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) and spreads 12 to 24 inches (30 to 60 cm). It features nodding, yellow, bell-shaped flowers in the spring, which are subtly showy and followed by berries that turn red as they mature.
Yellow Mandarin is valued for its charming flowers and its ability to thrive in the shaded understory of gardens, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens and shaded borders. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal care once established. Gardeners should provide it with consistently moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter to mimic its natural forest floor habitat. While it prefers full shade, it can tolerate dappled sunlight.
