Summary
Prostanthera cuneata, commonly known as Alpine Mint Bush, is an evergreen shrub native to the alpine and subalpine regions as well as cool temperate forests in Southeastern Australia. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). The Alpine Mint Bush has a compact, rounded form with small, aromatic leaves that are a notable feature along with its flowers. It produces an abundance of small, tubular purple and white flowers that are highly ornamental and bloom profusely in the spring and early summer, attracting pollinators such as bees.
This plant is valued for its hardiness, low maintenance, and particularly for the fragrant foliage which releases a minty scent when crushed. It has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its excellence for garden use. Commonly used in rockeries, as a border plant, or in containers, it provides a striking contrast with its vibrant flowers and dense foliage. Alpine Mint Bush prefers a sunny position but can tolerate part shade, requires medium amounts of water, and thrives in well-drained soils. It is frost hardy, corresponding to an RHS hardiness rating of H4 and suitable for USDA hardiness zones 8 to 9. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
