Estimated Native Range
Summary
Prostanthera nivea, commonly known as Snowy Mintbush, is an evergreen shrub native to the dry sclerophyll forests and woodlands of Eastern Australia. It typically grows to a height of 1–4 m (3 ft 3 in – 13 ft 1 in) and features four-ridged branches. Contrary to what might be expected from its common name, Snowy Mintbush is not notably aromatic. The plant is characterized by its small, oval-shaped leaves and its profusion of white to pale lilac flowers, which are often spotted with purple and appear in the spring. The flowers are small but numerous, creating a showy display against the dark green foliage.
Snowy Mintbush is valued for its ornamental flowers and as a habitat plant for native fauna. It is used in gardens for informal hedges, as a feature shrub, or in mixed borders. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate part shade and requires medium amounts of water and well-drained soils. It is relatively low-maintenance once established. However, it may be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and should be protected from strong winds. There are no widely recognized cultivars of this species in the horticultural trade.CC BY-SA 4.0
