Summary
Prunus ilicifolia subsp. occidentalis, commonly known as Catalina Island Cherry or Hollyleaf Cherry, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the chaparral, oak woodlands, and coastal sage scrub of Southern California, including the Channel Islands, and Baja California. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 15-30 feet (4.6-9 meters) and a width of 10-15 feet (3-4.6 meters). This species features dense, glossy, holly-like leaves and clusters of fragrant, white flowers that bloom in the spring, followed by small, red to purple cherries that are attractive to wildlife.
The Hollyleaf Cherry is valued for its drought tolerance, making it suitable for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens. Its dense foliage and adaptability to pruning make it an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or as a windbreak. The cherries are edible and can be used in jellies and preserves. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers medium or fast-draining clay, loam, or sandy soils. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. It is relatively free of serious pests and diseases but can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
