Summary

Prunus maackii, commonly known as Amur Chokecherry, is a deciduous tree native to mixed forests, forest edges, and riverbanks in East Asia and the Russian Far East. It typically grows to 4–10 m tall, but specimens in cultivation have reached up to 17 m in height with a trunk diameter of 90 cm. The bark is a notable feature, starting as smooth and glossy bronze-yellow on young trees and transitioning to fissured, dull dark grey-brown with age. The tree produces erect spikes of flowers 5–7 cm long, each with five white petals, 8–10 mm in diameter. Flowering occurs in mid-spring, and the fruit, a small cherry-like drupe 5–7 mm in diameter, matures from green to red and finally dark purple or black from early summer to early autumn.

Amur Chokecherry is valued for its decorative bark and white flowers, which are moderately showy. It is often used as an ornamental tree in northern Europe and North America. The tree is hardy, tolerating severe winter cold but not heat, making it suitable for cooler climates. The fruit is used to make juice, jelly, and jam. In cultivation, it thrives in full sun to part shade, requiring medium amounts of water and well-drained soil. While it is not typically prone to diseases, it can become invasive outside its native range, so gardeners should check local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
