Summary

Pseudophoenix sargentii, commonly known as Florida Cherry Palm or Buccaneer Palm, is an evergreen palm native to coastal scrub, sandy dunes, and rocky ridges in the Caribbean, South Florida, and parts of Mexico. It is a medium-sized palm that can grow to a height of 26 feet (8 meters) with a slender, ringed trunk up to 12 inches (30 centimeters) in diameter, often with a slight bulge in the middle. The leaves are blue-green, adding to its ornamental value. The inflorescences bear small, yellowish flowers that are spaced in loose clusters, followed by red to purple fruits resembling cherries, which are attractive to wildlife. Flowering occurs in the spring and early summer.

The Florida Cherry Palm is valued for its slow growth, drought tolerance, and salt tolerance, making it suitable for coastal landscapes. It is used as a focal point in tropical and subtropical gardens, and its striking form makes it a popular choice for urban and coastal landscaping. It requires minimal maintenance once established. This palm prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in well-drained sandy soils. While it can tolerate drought, occasional watering during extended dry periods can be beneficial. It is not known for having significant disease or pest issues, but it can be sensitive to cold temperatures and should be protected from frost.CC BY-SA 4.0
