Summary

Pseudotsuga menziesii, commonly known as Douglas fir, is an evergreen tree native to the mixed coniferous forests and coastal regions of Western North America. It can grow from 20–100 meters (70–330 feet) tall with a diameter of up to 2.4 meters (8 feet). The coastal variety of Douglas fir can live over 500 years, with the oldest specimens reaching over 1,300 years, while the Rocky Mountain variety typically does not exceed 400 years. This species is adaptable but prefers acidic or neutral soils and can develop deeper taproots on drier sites. Its appearance is characterized by a conical shape, with thick, ridged bark and flat, soft needles. The cones are distinctive with protruding bracts and are an important food source for wildlife.

Douglas fir is valued for its fast growth, timber quality, and ornamental attributes. It is used for reforestation, as a Christmas tree, and in large landscapes for its majestic form. In cultivation, it requires full sun, medium amounts of water, and well-drained soil. It is important to be aware of its potential invasiveness outside its native range and to check local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
